Who was in the stable

on that first Christmas night?

When Bethlehem, Kind David’s town,

was bathed in Heaven’s light?

First there were the silent ones;

cattle, donkey, sheep,

Breathing softly, resting sweetly

while we were asleep.

Then, a strong young carpenter

and his weary wife,

Settled down upon the straw

and welcomed a new life.

Suddenly, above the hills

where shepherds watched their sheep,

Angels burst into a song

that shook them from their sleep.

To the stable, cold and dark,

there came the very first;

Seeking for the Savior

to celebrate His birth.

Later, wise men would arrive

and stir that sleepy town,

Bringing gifts of gold and myrrh

on camels strong and tall.

Now through the ages

more have come until that humble stall

Has housed a multitude of souls

who hear the Master’s call.
